Clearly, the recital of Kaddish, in which we are m’kadeish Hashem’s Name in public, does something very powerful in Shamayim!

The power of Kaddish is something that has been recognized throughout Jewish history as one of the most profound ways a child can honor a departed parent. But what exactly does this prayer accomplish in the Heavenly realms?

The Zohar teaches us that when a son recites Kaddish for his father, it creates a tremendous elevation for the neshamah. The response of the congregation – “Yehei Shemei Rabba” – has the power to overturn even harsh decrees.

Consider the following story that illustrates this point beautifully:

A man once approached a great Rav, deeply troubled. His father had passed away many years ago, and due to circumstances beyond his control, he had been unable to say Kaddish properly during the year of aveilus. “Is there anything I can do now?” he asked desperately.

The Rav assured him that it’s never too late to bring merit to a neshamah. He advised the man to sponsor Torah learning – specifically Mishnah study – in his father’s memory. “The letters of נשמה (neshamah) rearrange to spell משנה (Mishnah),” the Rav explained. “This connection is not coincidental.”

The man followed the advice, and shortly after, he had a vivid dream. His father appeared to him with a radiant countenance, thanking him for the tremendous gift he had received in the World to Come.The Eternal Impact

When we sponsor Mishnah study or recite Kaddish, we are not merely performing a ritual. We are actively participating in elevating a soul, creating a spiritual bond that transcends the boundaries between this world and the next.
